Hindu group protests story on inter-religious marriage

Two guards were wounded by hard-line Hindu activists for trying to protect a news report on an inter-religious marriage. This incident took place in the offices of the Star news network in Mumbai on Monday

"About 40 to 50 men wielding hammers came into the reception area and started smashing window panes," said Yash Khanna, the head of communications at Star.

Khanna said two guards were beaten and four cars were vandalized in the parking lot.

The men claimed to be from a previously unknown group, the Hindu Rashtriya Senna, or Hindu Nationalist Body, and were apparently angry over a story aired by Star about a Muslim boy who married a Hindu girl despite their parents' objections.

Star showed footage of its office, the floors covered in shards of shattered glass.

Local police officer D.S. Patin said police arrested 18 men for the attack and were looking for 25 others.

Relations between India's Hindus and Muslim minority are often tense. Marriage between the groups is frowned upon in traditional Indian society, where a majority of weddings are arranged by parents.
