Elderly U.S. woman lives after being shot 5 times while she slept

An 88-year-old woman was recovering in a hospital after being shot five times Monday morning while she slept, authorities said.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office was still investigating why Yuki Harris was targeted.

"We don't believe this is a random shooting. We don't know at this time," Cpl. Susan Soto said.

Witnesses said they saw three men leaving the scene, according to the incident report.

The shooting happened at about 12:40 a.m. (0440 GMT), Soto said. Deputies found several bullet holes throughout the house, reports AP.

Harris' 58-year-old daughter Michi Nogami, who lives in the same house, said she could smell smoke from a shot that entered her room just above her bed, the report said.

Sheriff's officials would not release details on Harris' injuries.
