11th Russian-American Seminar opens in Saint Petersburg

The Eleventh Russian-American Seminar opens on Monday in St Petersburg State University. This is an annual open forum to discuss urgent problems of the home and foreign policy of Russia, the Russian-American relations, the internal and foreign policy of the United States, and the role of Russia and the United States in the world today. As a RIA Novosti correspondent was told by Professor Boris Shiryayev, head of the North American studies chair of the University's international relations faculty, in the eleven years of its existence this seminar has become widely popular among scholars, politicians and public leaders. This year, the eighty seminar participants will include not only scholars from Russia and the United States, but also from Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Japan and the Republic of Korea. The key themes at the seminar will be: "The World after September 11, 2001" and "New Outlook for Russian-American Relations," said Boris Shiryayev.

On December 10, 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its thirty articles enshrining basic and fundamental rights guaranteeing dignity of the human person and equality for all, regardless of race, color, creed or gender. A pipe dream?
