Powerlifting champion wins trophy and dies in car accident

The funeral ceremony of Russian Powerlifting Champion, 31-year-old Eugene Fedyakin, who was killed in a car accident on his way from sports competitions, took place in the Novosibirsk region.

According to the regional department of traffic police, the accident occurred in the morning of Oct. 22 on M-52 federal highway, BFM.Ru reports. A Toyota car skidded on a slippery road, spun several times and swerved into the oncoming traffic. The next moment, the Toyota collided with a Scania truck.

The athlete was staying on the passenger seat. Another athlete - Igor Kompanchenko - was driving. The 33-year-old driver was deprived of his license for DUI. The driver and passenger of Toyota died at the scene.

The Powerlifting Cup of the Novosibirsk region took place on October 19-21. Eugene Fedyakin, a native of the region, received another gold medal in his weight class during the competitions.

"Eugene was returning from regional competitions, where he became the absolute champion, - Alexey Nezgovorov, the head of the local Department for Physical Education and Sports, told Life News. - We all suffered a great loss with his tragic death. He was a great athlete and a very good person."

Eugene Fedyakin received the title of master of sports on weightlifting in March last year.  In December, he became the master of sports in powerlifting of international class. He also won four medals of the highest standard at the competitions of national scale. In 2012, the athlete took the first place at the Cup of Russia in powerlifting and bench press. His last award was the Cup of the Novosibirsk region in powerlifting.
