Endangered owl species live online in Nizhny Novgorod region

On the website of the Ministry for Ecology and Natural Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod region one can observe the life of a family of owls.

A webcam in the nest of a tawny owl was installed in May of this year for scientific purposes. Yet, anyone can watch the birds online. This owl species is included in the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region - only a few hundred couples of these birds have been left on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod region. Owl chicks will leave the nest within a few days.

"The work on the conservation of rare animals and plants of the Nizhny Novgorod region is very important. One needs to continue publishing regional editions of the Red Book, - Nizhny Novgorod region Governor Valery Shantsev said. - One should attract civil society organizations of the region to this work and have as many local residents as possible involved in this activity as well. Children should participate too, as they need to learn to take care of nature and environment at a young age."

Since the publication of the previous edition of the regional Red Book in 1996, 38 living creatures have been excluded from the lists of endangered species owing to special measures to stabilize the population of animals and plants in the region. In particular, the number of eagles, ospreys, white-tailed eagles, black-throated divers and other rare birds has grown. In 2014, for the first time in decades, a nest of black stork was found in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
