U.S. military suicide rates increased 20 percent in 2007

At least 121 U.S. soldier committed suicide in 2007 – the whole number rose by 20 percent in comparison to 2006.

The results appeared despite all efforts to improve mental health and stress-factors in the army.

At least 89 suicides were confirmed and 32 cases have been investigated.

Many of those soldier committed suicide in Iraq.

However, suicide has been fairly common in warfare throughout history. Soldiers and civilians committed suicide to avoid capture and slavery (including the wave of German and Japanese suicides in the last days of World War II). Commanders committed suicide rather than accept defeat. Spies and officers have often committed suicide to avoid revealing secrets under interrogation and/or torture.
