On October 20th, director of the Ukrainian Democratic Initiatives Fund Ilko Kucheriv applied for the individual membership in NATO. Kucheriv submitted his application to NATO Secretary General George Robertson, who was on a visit to Kiev.
The Ukrainian citizen applied for the exclusive NATO membership during the first session of the Ukrainian national assembly of public associations included in the Ukraine-NATO league. Robertson promised to consider the application. Ilko Kucheriv confirmed in his application that he had assumed all obligations that arise in connection with the membership in the alliance.
Kucheriv has been striving for the individual membership in NATO for seven years. The director of the above-mentioned Ukrainian fund hopes that George Robertson will make an exception for him, because only a state can become a NATO member. The Ukrainian man believes that the high-ranking American official will assist in the introduction of adequate changes in NATO's Charter.
