Juventus beats Inter 2-0

Juventus opened up a five-point lead atop Serie A with a 2-0 win over Inter Milan on Sunday behind goals from David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved.

Juve is 6-0-0 in the Italian league and also has started the Champions League with two wins. Juventus' last loss was to Inter in the Italian Super Cup on Aug. 20.

In the 22nd minute, Trezeguet headed in the rebound off Zlatan Ibrahimovic's free kick. Nedved scored directly off a free kick in the 34th. Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar appeared unhappy with the positioning of Inter's wall and Nedved directed the ball exactly where Cesar was yelling for his teammates to move to.

Both of Juve's top strikers, Ibrahimovic and Trezeguet, left the game early due to injuries. Ibrahimovic was the victim of a brutal foul in the 39th by Marco Materazzi. Juventus has a full 18 points. AC Milan and Fiorentina are tied for second with 13 points each and Inter Milan and Sampdoria are fourth with 12 points each.

Earlier on a rainy day up and down the peninsula, Paolo Maldini's first two-goal game led Milan to a 2-1 win over Reggina. The goals were Maldini's first this season and the 26th and 27th of the 37-year-old defender's career.

Five minutes in at San Siro, Maldini angled in a mid-range shot. In the 20th, he converted a textbook header off a corner. Maldini was contemplating retirement a few weeks ago, worried that his battered knees could not hold up.

Reggina did not score until the third minute of second-half injury time, when Simone Cavalli found the net. Fiorentina beat 10-man Livorno 3-2 in Florence.

After Livorno's Cristiano Lucarelli was ejected for arguing in the 16th minute, Fiorentina took a 3-0 lead behind goals from Luca Toni _ his sixth in six games _ Martin Jorgensen and Gianpaolo Pazzini. Fabio Galante and Stefano Morrone's goals for Livorno in the final five minutes made for a tense finish at Artemio Franchi stadium.

Sampdoria won 4-1 at Messina with two goals by Emiliano Bonazzoli, who moved into a tie with Toni for the league lead. Francesco Tavano scored twice as Empoli held Palermo to a 2-2 draw in Sicily.

AS Roma had a man advantage for the final 32 minutes at home against Siena but still lost 3-2. After Christian Panucci leveled the match at 2-2 in the 86th, a defensive error led to Siena's winning goal in the 90th by Francesco Colonnese.

Croatian striker Sasa Bjelanovic scored twice as newly promoted Ascoli beat struggling Parma 3-1 for its first win back in the top division. New coach Silvio Baldini won his debut with Lecce, 3-0 over Cagliari, AP reports.
