Mexico won its first Under-17 World Championship

Carlos Vela and Omar Esparza scored two minutes apart midway through the first half and Mexico won its first Under-17 World Championship Sunday, beating three-time and defending champion Brazil 3-0.

Vela scored his fifth goal of the tournament in the 31st minute and Esparza followed in the 33rd. Ever Guzman completed the victory with a final goal in the 86th. A crowd of more than 40,000 in Lima's National Stadium feted the young Mexicans with chants of "Mexico! Mexico!"

Earlier Sunday, the Netherlands beat Turkey 2-1 in the third-place game. Vela scored on a diving header, driving the ball low into the net, and Esparza followed with a blast from the right side past goalkeeper Felipe.

Brazil missed its best scoring opportunity at the start of the second half, when Celso fired a free kick that goalkeeper Sergio Arias knocked away with a spectacular save. The Brazilians finished with a 10-man squad after the expulsion of Marcelo at the final.

They earlier lost Anderson, the heart of their offense, in the 16th minute after he collided with Mexico's Hector Moreno, and was replaced by Mauricio. Anderson was later voted the tournament's most valuable player by journalists covering the championship.

Guzman, a late replacement for Giovani Dos Santos scored on breakaway, taking the ball all the way to the box to face off with Felipe. Stumbling while trying to keep control of the ball, Guzman scrambled to his feet, dodged around a defender and fired a left-footed shot that shook the net as Felipe fell in a backward slide on the artificial turf, AP reports.
