Mexico's youth national team won first soccer world championship

The euphoria was palpable throughout Mexico on Monday, as the country toasted the Carlos Vela, Omar Esparza and Ever Guzman scored as the Mexicans blanked Brazil 3-0 on Sunday, in the Under 17 World Championship finals in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

The team touched down around 6 p.m. to cheers and chants of "Mexico! Mexico!" from about 200 supporters, many of them airline personnel and members of the grounds crew, waiting outside a small terminal apart from the main building at the capital's Benito Juarez International Airport.

Once on the ground, the team held a brief news conference, but not before breaking into a celebratory song and hoisting the trophy they earned high.

Vela, a striker who scored five times during the tournament, said the supporters at the airport helped the magnitude of earning Mexico's first soccer championship at any level sink in.

"Up until this minute, we hadn't realized the importance of what winning this tournament means," said Vela, whose older brother Alejandro is a reserve on the Mexican League's Chivas of Guadalajara squad, reports the AP. I.L.
