Deutsche Bank's Art Collection to Be Displayed in St. Petersburg's Hermitage, September 14 - 11 September, 2002 - News

An exhibition entitled Focusing on Man will open in the Alexander Hall of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg on September 14. Exhibited will be 60 artworks from the collection of the Deutsche Bank AG. The whole unique collection includes about 50,000 items and is divided between 911 branch offices of the bank in 43 countries throughout the world. It comprises items ranging from classical modernist artworks dating back to 1910-1930s to quite modern works representing the latest trends in art.

According to the press service of the State Hermitage, the exhibit will include pictures, prints and sculptures by such widely known German impressionists as Ernst Barlach, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Eric Heckel. Most interesting are grotesque satirical sketches by Otto Dix or Karl Hubbuch or water colours by Oscar Schlemmer. The post-war period of German art is represented by a number of works by Horst Antes, Georg Baselitz, Eugen Schenbeck, and Joseph Bois. This project was prepared jointly by the State Hermitage and the Deutsche Bank AG with the participation of the German Goethe Cultural Centre. Besides the exhibition, the project includes a symposium entitled Man in the 20th Century, and a public lecture by Ulrich Beck, a well-known sociologist, entitled On the Dialectics of Individualisation and Globalisation of Public Life

The exhibition will last until December 15.
