Former champion Martin Lel of Kenya and top British marathoner Jon Brown joined a world-class field for the New York City Marathon on Nov. 6.
British miler and three-time Olympian John Mayock will make his NYC Marathon debut, and Jelena Prokupcuka of Latvia will join the women's field, the New York Road Runners announced on Wednesday.
Lel, who won the 2003 event in 2:10:30, won the London Marathon in April in a personal best 2:07:26. The Kenyan joins a field that includes world record-holder and countryman Paul Tergat, defending champion Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa and runner-up Meb Keflezighi of the United States.
Brown finished sixth (2:11:24) in New York in 2001. He holds the British record at 4 miles, 10,000 meters, 12 kilometers and 15K. He finished fourth in the marathon at the Sydney and Athens Olympics.
Mayock ran the 1,500 meters in the 1996 and 2000 Games and the 5,000 meters in Athens. Prokupcuka, the Latvian marathon record-holder, won the Osaka Ladies International Marathon this year, AP reports.
