Yevgeny Mravinsky 4th International Youth Contest

On Friday, St. Petersburg launches the Yevgeny Mravinsky 4th International Youth Contest, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the famous conductor. The Russian Ministry of Culture, the City Administration, the Mravinsky School of Arts and the Russian Association of Musical Contests are the organisers of the contest.

Hundreds of applications to participate in the contest had been received and only 110 musicians from Russia, Baltic States, the CIS, Norway, Switzerland and Finland were selected for the second round, the contest's organisational committee disclosed. The young performers age from 11 to 18.

The jury of the contest will include musicians and professors of the leading music schools from Russia, Poland, Germany and Estonia.

The contest will be held in 4 categories - alto-violin, cello, wooden wind instruments and brass instruments. Prize winning money will be awarded to musicians in each category. The grand award is $700.

Master-classes of the jury members and round-table discussions of the contest participants will be held in St. Petersburg's Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire within the framework of the festival. Famous German flutist Wolfgang Wendel will give a concert.

The ceremony to close the festival, the awarding ceremony and the final concert of the laureates of the contest will take place on March 31st at the Dmitry Shostakovich Grand Hall of the Philharmonic. The contest's final evening will host a ceremony of including Yevgeny Mravinsky's name in "The Golden Book of St. Petersburg".
