Davydenko, Rusedski, Kiefer advance in St. Petersburg

Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko downed Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1 in the St. Petersburg Open first round on Wednesday for his 50th match win of the season.

Davydenko was in seventh place in the race for a berth in the eight-man, season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, and a good effort in the hometown event would help him qualify for the first time.

In a second-round match, fifth-seeded Nicolas Kiefer beat Jurgen Melzer of Austria 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 for the German's fifth successive win over Melzer.

Greg Rusedski, seeded seventh, defeated Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 6-4, 6-4 in his tournament opener, and Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark and Robin Vik of the Czech Republic joined Kiefer in the quarterfinals, AP reports.
