Charity basketball game in Athens honours Earvin "Magic" Johnson

Charity basketball game in Athens in honor of Earvin "Magic" Johnson raised money for a global AIDS campaign and victims of recent deadly wildfires in Greece.

"Thank you for allowing me to come to your beautiful country," Johnson, who did not play Tuesday, told the crowd before the game. "This is to help all the people with HIV/AIDS and for the people affected by that terrible fire."

Money raised was to go to the AIDS campaign and a relief fund set up for victims of the August fires in southern and eastern Greece that killed at least 65 people.

The government announced early Tuesday that the fire relief fund had raised 150 million EUR(US$212 million) in donations from the public and private sector.

Tuesday's game featured several key members of the Greece team that beat the Soviet Union for the European Championship 20 years against the Greek under-19 team.

The event was held under the auspices of UNICEF's office in Greece.

Johnson retired from the NBA in 1991 after disclosing he was HIV-positive but returned for 32 games in the 1995-1996 season.
