The first ten minutes were characterized by what has become known as Spanish Fury. David Villa saw two of his shots saved spectacularly by Eduardo on 3’ and 7’, after which Portugal settled down and began to dominate the game.
On 21’, Casillas saved a Tiago bullet from outside the area and then again, denying Hugo Almeida. On 28’, the Spanish keeper was again in action, doing well to save a direct free kick taken by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Both sides spend the rest of the first half trying not to take risks.
Spain came out of the tunnel more organized, more direct and more objective and just had the cutting edge over Portugal. The real hero of the afternoon was not David Villa, who scored the first goal of the tournament against Portugal – the only one, and it was enough to see them out – but Portuguese goalkeeper Eduardo.
60’ he saved from point blank range, a shot from Llorente. 61’, Villa shot just wide. 63’ David Villa, 1-0. Eduardo saved the first shot, Villa scored from the rebound. 70’ and 77’ Eduardo saved shots by Sergio Ramos and again, David Villa.
