Turkmenia And The European Union Have Exchanged Views On The Situation In Afghanistan

Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov and Chairman of the European Union Council, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium Louis Michel discussed the political situation in Central Asian region and the future of Afghanistan after the anti-terrorist operation at their meeting in Ashkhabad on Thursday. According to the Belgian minister, the greater part of their meeting was devoted to the humanitarian aid to Afghanistan and to cooperation between the European Union and Turkmenia. Louis Michel said that Turkmenia played a key role in the region and for this reason it would be important for Europe to know the position of that country on the situation in Afghanistan. Turkmenia and the European Union have close approaches to the future of Afghanistan, underscored the minister. He highly rated the activity of Turkmenia in helping the people of Afghanistan.
