Soros Fund may be expelled from Georgia

Certain foreign charities are financing political opposition in Georgia. This was announced by Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. 'They will all be expelled from Georgia,' he promised.

Mr Shevardnadze did not specify which charities he had in mind. However, a Rosbalt correspondent was told by the president's press office that he was talking about the Soros Fund. There have been articles in the Georgian newspapers recently suggesting that the fund is financing the well-known opposition movement Enough.

The representative office of the fund in Georgia accepted that the threat was aimed at the Soros Fund. According to Manager of the representative office Kakhi Lomaya, Georgia may soon face the same problems as Belarus and the former Yugoslavia, which also expelled the Soros Fund from their territory. The leaders of these countries were then widely seen as dictators. Mr Lomaya warned that Mr Shevardnadze may suffer a similar fate. He also stressed that the Soros Fund had financed a number of political programmes in Georgia, including the creation of an anti-corruption council for the president. At that time Mr Shevardnadze had nothing against the Soros Fund, he emphasised.
