A 47-year-old man was arrested for using a sword to sever the hand of his 15-year-old daughter's boyfriend.
The alleged attacker was arrested on the Aegean Sea island of Naxos Saturday, and is due to appear before a public prosecutor on Tuesday, faced with charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Police said the incident occurred late Friday.
The 18-year-old victim was initially hospitalized on the island but later flown to Athens, where surgeons on Monday were trying to reattach his right hand.
"The patient had multiple injuries to the head and other parts of the body. Our priority was to save his life. The chances of him regaining the function of his hand are slim," said Yiannis Ignatidis, a surgeon at the Attica General Hospital in Athens.
State-run NET television said the alleged attacker was convicted of murder in 1996 and recently paroled for good behavior.
