Setting Up Global Security System Is Main Task Of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

Setting up a fundamentally new global system of security is of priority importance for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the fight against international terrorism, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Yakovenko said in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, such a system must be "oriented to the really existing present-day threats" and be based "on adequate understanding of the character and essence of the processes taking place in the world." "The SCO member states firmly come out for avoiding, in the course of the struggle against terrorism, the creation of new demarcation lines in the world," Yakovenko noted. Nor do the SCO member states tolerate any attempts to present antiterrorist activity as "a confrontation of cultures, religions and nations," the diplomat emphasized. As he pointed out, in this global struggle there must not be any place for "double standards", for attempts to divide terrorists into "bad" and "good" ones. Yakovenko holds the view that "the central coordinating role in this matter must belong to the UN and its Security Council." It is linked to the fact that this international organisation bears "main responsibility for maintenance of international peace and security," the diplomat concluded.
