School for blind children reopened in Kabul

Afghanistan's only school for blind children has been reopened in Kabul, reported IRIN agency, which covers the work of various UN organizations and charity missions in Afghanistan.

The three-story school building was practically annihilated in 1993, in the course of clashes between opposed Afghan groups. It was rebuilt only recently, the agency said.

The school opened its doors to admit 95 children, the majority of them blind from birth and others blinded by rocket and mine explosions during the civil war.

The building was restored with money donated by the UNICEF, the Italian government, and a charity organization based in Germany. Restoration works and school activities are being overseen by the International Assistance Mission, or IAM, which has been helping blind Afghans for more than 30 years now.
