A brain-dead woman, who lived with the help of life support devices for almost three months and gave birth to a healthy baby Wednesday, died Thursday after doctors removed life support.
Susan Torres was removed from life support after her daughter was delivered two months premature at a Virginia hospital on Tuesday.
"This is obviously a bittersweet time for our family," Mrs Torres' brother-in-law was quoted as saying by BBC.
She suffered a stroke on 7 May after an undiagnosed cancer spread to her brain.
Doctors said she was brain dead, but they offered to keep her alive for the sake of the unborn baby.
Mrs Torres was four months pregnant with her second child.
Her husband and parents agreed that she would have wanted to be put on life support in the hopes of saving the baby, but no longer, according to Independent.
Brother-in-law Jason Torres announced her death on Wednesday.
"Early this morning after a brief goodbye with her parents, husband and other family members, Susan Michele Roland Torres passed away after the machines which sustained her life were turned off at my brother's request," Torres said.
