Emissary of terrorists Zakayev, arrested in Denmark, can be deported to Belgium

Maskhadov's emissary Akhmed Zakayev who was detained in Denmark at the request of the Russian authorities may be deported to Belgium. Such a conclusion is drawn by Belgian mass media.

As the newspaper Standaard writes, such a course of developments is possible, in particular, if Zakayev asks for a political asylum in Denmark. In accordance with the Dublin convention of 1977, Copenhagen can re-address the request to Belgium, since the convention implies that a request to give a political asylum must be considered by the country which issued the visa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium confirmed that Zakayev had arrived in Copenhagen on the Schengen visa issued by the Embassy of Belgium in London on August 26th. The Foreign Ministry assures that Zakayev did not figure either in the wanted list of Interpol, or in the similar lists of Benelux, or in the Schengen databank.

According to the Belgian newspaper, so far Zakayev has not addressed the Danish authorities with an official request to give him a political asylum but, as Standaard claims, Zakayev is thinking of it.

Possible deportation of Zakayev to Belgium can put this country in "an extremely uncomfortable position in the international arena", the newspaper Standaard notes. As it writes, Brussels will find itself facing the choice: either to extradite Zakayev to Russia, or to give him a political asylum.

Akhmed Zakayev was detained by the Danish police on October 30th and, upon the decision of the Copenhagen court, was taken into custody on that same day. The information on Akhmed Zakayev's involvement in a number of terrorist acts in Russia served as the grounds for his arrest.

On October 31st, the Ministry of Justice of Denmark received from Russia an official request to extradite Zakayev.

On Tuesday, November 5th, Prosecutor-General of Russia Vladimir Ustinov handed over additional materials proving Zakayev's involvement in terrorist activities to Danish Minister of Justice Lene Espersen who is staying in Moscow.

Reporting that an SAS operative stormed a Kenyan hotel "single-handedly" is not only a lie, it is also highly disrespectful to the Kenyan authorities.
