Russia's Foreign Ministry Accuses Georgia of Intention to Resume Armed Confrontation with Abkhazia

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, 'War calls are heard again in Tbilisi demanding that the problem of Abkhazia be resolved by force'. The so-called "exiled government of Abkhazia" announced the end of moratorium on the forming of "guerilla" groups there. 'In other words', as the statement of Russia's Foreign Ministry continues, 'what they are talking about is once again sending into Abkhazia groups of saboteurs-terrorists, laying land mines, killing civilians, taking hostages, and attacking Russia's peacemakers'.

The ministry also notes that 'while these actions of the "exiled" continue, there are provocative threats against Aslan Abashidze, the special representative of the President of Georgia as concerns the Georgian-Abkhazian settlement'. These actions and threats not only meet with no opposition on the part of the official authorities of Georgia but, on the contrary, seem to be supported there.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia states that 'This renewed militant rhetoric is irresponsible and provocative and can lead to nothing but the further increase of tensions in the zone of Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, the destabilisation of the entire situation, and the frustration of the efforts of many, including Russia, directed at establishing a dialogue between Tbilisi and Sukhumi.
