Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia warns the USA against launching war against the peaceful population of Afghanistan. His Holiness said this to journalists on Monday at the St. Trinity-Sergiev Lavra in connection with the counter-terrorist operation launched in Afghanistan. "Dealing pin-point strikes and punishing those who have committed the acts of terrorism is one thing, but fighting against a country with peaceful people is something quite different," said the Patriarch. He also said that the missile strikes "may cause retaliatory actions, as a result of which peaceful people from both sides will suffer."
The choice of the city of Helsinki is not incidental as the capital of Finland had hosted US-Soviet negotiations on the limitation of nuclear stockpiles in 1969
