Orphaned children emerge on Tyra Banks show

Supermodel-turned-TV talk show host Tyra Banks announced that corporate donors will provide a computer, clothing allowances and college tuition for seven children who were orphaned when 11 people were mowed down by a man police said was driving a stolen tow truck. The children, including 18-year-old Karla Becerra, appeared on "The Tyra Banks Show" to discuss how the family is holding up.

"I'm like the mother now of all these kids and so I have to hold it together," she told Banks. "I'm proud of you," Banks replied. Becerra is the oldest of the children whose mother, Rosa Carrera, 34, was killed in October when the truck driven by Raymond Bermudez went out of control in suburban Vernon. Two other people, including Carrera's husband, Daniel Dorantes, also were killed and eight others were injured. Dorantes, 35, was the father of Carrera's youngest child. Bermudez, 29, has been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon and auto theft. Authorities said he stole the truck hours after being released from Salinas Valley State Prison. The television show said it had pulled together donations of a computer for schoolwork; new shoes every month for a year for each child, a year's worth of groceries from a supermarket chain and a $1,000 annual clothing allowance for each child until they turn 21.

The children also will have a college tuition trust fund established for them at Union Bank of California. The other Becerra children are Juan Carlos, 17; Rocio, 15; Reyna, 13; Mariela, 11; Victor, 9; and Daniel, 6. Juan Carlos is staying with his uncle in Los Angeles and the rest were to live with another uncle in Bakersfield, where the family had been planning to move before the accident, reports the AP. N.U.
