Russia To Act Observer In WTO Ministerial Conference Opening In Qatar

Russia will take part as an observer in the fourth ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) opening in Qatar on Friday, RIA Novosti was told in the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Russia. As First Deputy Minister of Economic Development Maxim Medvedkov earlier said, talks among the WTO member states on changing some treaties, as well on new agreements on the regulation of foreign trade will be held within the framework of the conference. "Many questions to be submitted for discussion are of paramount interest to Russia," Medvedkov noted. In particular, the questions of state support for agriculture, anti-dumping agreements, investment questions and settlement of disputes linked with them, as well as reduction of customs tariffs and a change of free transit terms will be touched upon. Questions related to the beginning of a new round of the multilateral talks within the WTO framework, which is called "Millennium Round", will be touched upon at the conference. As Russian foreign-trade experts note, once in the WTO, Russia will be able to participate in the new round, which signifies its direct participation in the working out of new international trade rules.
