Los Angeles Barrington Station post office renamed in honor of actor Karl Malden

The U.S. Postal Service honored Academy Award-winning actor Karl Malden on yesterday by putting his name on a post office.

The Barrington Station post office was renamed the Karl Malden Post Office Building, said spokesman Don Smeraldi.

Actor Kirk Douglas and Postmaster General John E. Potter lauded Malden for his achievements in film and his contributions to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.

Malden is a longtime member of the committee that meets quarterly to discuss ideas for stamp designs, Smeraldi said. The group considers more than 50,000 suggestions each year.

"He's really part of our family," Smeraldi said.

Malden, 93, won an Oscar for his performance in the 1951 film "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Other celebrities who've had post offices named for them include Ray Charles and Nat King Cole.

U.S. Congress approved the renaming Oct. 4.
