Afghanistan: post-Taliban constitution delayed

The beginning of the work of Loya Jirga (in Pashtu it means Great Assembly - a traditional institute of tribal democracy of the Afghan Pashtoons, which was convened at crucial moments of the country's history, became important again in present-day Afghanistan as a pre-parliament) has been postponed from December 10 to 13. Loya Jirga is to adopt a new Constitution of the post-Taliban Afghanistan.

The Afghan information agency, Bahtar, reported that the decision to postpone the work of Loya Jirga had been taken by head of the country's provisional government Hamid Karzai in connection with the current difficulties preventing the forum's delegates from arriving in the Afghan capital.

As of today, the elections of Loya Jirga delegates have been held in all the 32 provinces of Afghanistan. A total of 500 delegates already arriving in Kabul will participate in Loya Jirga's work. In this connection, tightened security measures have been taken in the capital.

The future Constitution will be the sixth in Afghanistan's history. As Afghan experts say, the prepared draft of the new Constitution includes a lot of new elements and now causes numerous notes on the part of specialists. For this reason, the debates at the future Loya Jirga are likely to be hot.
