russia presses for speedy implementation of mideastern settlement "road map"

Russia finds it necessary to implement the "road map" for the Mideastern settlement, which was earlier agreed on by the Quartet of international mediators, as soon as possible. The statement was made by Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Alexander Saltanov at Thursday's meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Moscow Wahib Fadel, the Information and Press Department of the Russian Federation Foreign Ministry reported.

While discussing the state of things on Palestinian territory, the sides stressed the necessity to stop violence as soon as possible, adjust the situation and resume negotiations, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out.

The high-ranking officials also focused upon the Iraqi problem. Saltanov and Fadel voiced their concerns that "the hostilities have already caused numerous casualties among the peaceful population and are posing the threat of acute humanitarian crisis." Concerning further developments in Iraq, the sides were sure of the UN's important role in the country's post-war settlement.
