Suspect in missing British girl case questioned again in Portugal

The local police questioned the only formal suspect in the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann in Portugal again.

The only formal suspect in the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann in Portugal more than two months ago was questioned again by local police Tuesday, a news report said.

Robert Murat, a British man who lives near the hotel where the 4-year-old vanished May 3, entered police headquarters accompanied by his lawyer, cable news channel S.I.C. Noticias said.

Police spokesman Olegario Sousa said he could not confirm that Murat was being interviewed but said officers had planned to speak again this week to people they previously questioned.

"For the moment, there is nothing new to announce," Sousa told The Associated Press.

Madeleine disappeared after her parents left her and her brother and sister, 2-year-old twins, alone in their room while they went to a restaurant inside their hotel complex in Praia da Luz, a tiny resort town in Portugal's Algarve region.

Police questioned Murat but later released him, saying they did not have enough evidence to bring charges. Murat has denied any involvement in the girl's disappearance.

Police also interviewed Murat's friends and business acquaintances.

Officials say they have followed up dozens of leads in the case, but none has yielded results.

Madeleine's parents are still in Praia da Luz from where they have run an Internet campaign to help find their daughter.

The McCanns have also traveled to the Vatican, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Morocco to raise public awareness about Madeleine and the plight of abducted children.
