NATO-Russia tensions reach dangerous level

Experts of the European Leadership Network for Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation published the results of research entitled "Dangerous Brinkmanship - Close Military Encounters Between Russia and the West in 2014." The report describes the growth of tensions in relations between NATO and Russia as a result of the crisis in Ukraine.

The report listed a total of 45 incidents so far this year, including three classed as "high risk" and 11 others that were "serious incidents with escalation risk."

"We believe [the incidents] are a very serious development, not necessarily because they indicate a desire on the part of Russia to start a war but because they show a dangerous game of brinkmanship is being played, with the potential for unintended escalation in what is now the most serious security crisis in Europe since the cold war," the authors of the report said.

The report highlights the urgent need to establish diplomatic channels for cooperation between Russia and NATO countries to level increased tensions in the event of an unexpected outbreak of hostilities.

The previous report by ELN was published on 30 July. The report said that the situation in Ukraine could provoke an unintended war between Russia and the West.

The ELN expert community (European Leadership Network) consists of former senior European military commanders and politicians.
