New UN Security Council Iraq resolution must reflect Russia's positions

Moscow hopes that the new UN Security Council resolution on Iraq will reflect Russia's positions, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said following his negotiations with the foreign minister of Serbia and Montenegro Thursday.

"We believe that a new Iraq resolution is necessary, but it must reflect Russia's positions," the minister stressed.

"Russia stands for a political settlement of the Iraqi crisis, wherein the international community under the UN aegis should play an active role," Ivanov said.

The UN Security Council is currently holding consultations for working out a new Iraq resolution, he added.

At the initiative of the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, a meeting of foreign ministers of the UN Security Council permanent members will be held in Geneva on September 13 to discuss this issue.

Ivanov said that the discussion of amendments introduced to the new resolution was underway in New York.
