Deputy Interior Minister Of Russia Is Confident Of The Security Of Borders In Asian And Caucasian Sectors

Police Colonel-General Alexander Chekalin, Deputy Interior Minister of Russia, is confident of the security of Russia's borders in the Asian and Caucasian sectors. The gunmen will not cross over to the territory of the Russian Federation there, Chekalin told pressmen in St. Petersburg on Friday. He said that a special task has been set before the interior departments of Krasnodar Territory, Karachai-Circassia, as well as the North-Caucasian district of interior troops. "Nobody will take us unawares in these territories, for we have sufficiently well studied the experience of the past," stressed Chekalin. "Our troops have taken up positions and we have also troops in the reserve, so that the gunmen will not be able to get into the territory of the Russian Federation." Chekalin noted that the matter concerns staff, stand-by and information readiness. He said that there is so far no need to intensify the protection of the national border by interior bodies and to carry out any re-groupings. "Although, if need be, we shall be able to do that within a few hours," said the general.
