Police find Mexican anti-drug official dead

A high-ranking federal anti-drug official was found shot in his vehicle in Mexico City early Monday.

The director of an anti-drug intelligence center for the federal Attorney General's Office was allegedly shot five times, three in the face, the Reforma newspaper reported. Officials at the attorney general's office declined to comment.

Other media also quoted police officials identifying the victim as the director of the attorney general's intelligence center.

Drug gangs have increased their attacks in recent weeks, going after police and soldiers in response to President Felipe Calderon's nationwide crackdown on organized crime. Calderon's government has sent more than 20,000 soldiers to areas plagued by drug violence.
