Chris Rock as Oscar host is terrific

US comedian Chris Rock will host next year's Oscars ceremony, taking over from veteran host Billy Crystal, organisers announced today.

The fast-talking funnyman and movie star known for his biting social humour was named as the host of the 77th annual Academy Awards by the show's producer, Gil Cates.

"Chris represents the best of the new generation of comics," Cates said. "He always makes me laugh and he always has something interesting to say. Having him host the Oscars is terrific.", informs Herald Sun.

Rock, who’s been in the films "Head of State" and "Dogma," is best known for his standup comedy specials "Bigger & Blacker," "Bring the Pain" and "Never Scared." Rock, 39, has previously hosted the MTV’s Movie Awards.

The one-time "Saturday Night Live" regular has won three Emmys for his TV programs and two Grammys for his comedy albums. Rock currently is shooting a remake of "The Longest Yard" with Adam Sandler and recently provided the voice of the zebra in the animated feature "Madagascar," both to be released in May 2005, says MSNBC News.

According to Reuters, the choice of Rock, known for his often-provocative brand of humor, marks a sharp departure from the lower-key style of Crystal, 57, a favorite of Oscar audiences for his deadpan delivery, smooth ad-libs and Hollywood send-ups.

Other recent Oscar hosts include Steve Martin, who emceed the show in 2003 and 2001, and Whoopi Goldberg in 2002.

The United States' Head of Diplomacy, or Secretary of State, is an anachronistic, incompetent, meddling, intrusive, insolent and arrogant, rude individual, a brash, foul-mouthed upstart, a conceited, self-important guttersnipe and an insult to the international community, as fit for the job as a pedophile janitor in a grade school.
