Russia, Japan call for intense international cooperation in fighting terrorism

International terrorist networks, primarily al-Qaeda, continue to pose a serious threat to the global community's security, Russian and Japanese officials point out in a joint statement issued following the first round of bilateral consultations on the fight against terrorism. This round was held in Tokyo November 13 and 14. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Safonov led the Russian delegation.

The sides stressed the need for the world's nations to consolidate their anti-terror efforts, rallying around the UN, and informed each other of the counter-terrorism measures being taken in their respective countries.

They also reiterated their determination to actively cooperate in the fight against terrorism, both bilaterally and within multilateral organizations and forums, including the UN, the G8, and the APEC.

The participants in the Nov. 13-14 consultations denounced the recent hostage crisis in Moscow, with the Japanese officials offering their sincere condolences to the victims' relatives and friends.

The sides pointed out the usefulness of today's consultations and agreed to hold one round every year, alternatively in Russia and Japan, with the next round to have a Russian venue. It was decided that if any problems requiring urgent attention arise in between the consultations, working meetings will be held.

More than 5.8 million people voted for Nicholas Maduro at the presidential election in Venezuela. This is more than a quarter of registered voters. Why did those people vote for the man, who, as Western media write, took Venezuela to the brink of collapse?
