Spanish judge releases three terror suspects

A Spanish judge has released three people who were arrested on suspicion of financing and providing logistics for an Algerian Muslim extremist group, but ordered they surrender their passports and check in with the court weekly, court officials said Wednesday. Judge Felix Degayon of the National Court made the decision late Tuesday after questioning the suspects, two Algerian men and a Spanish woman, the officials said.

The three were among seven suspects arrested late last week in Spain's southern Costa del Sol region. The other four, all Algerians, were also interrogated Tuesday, and the judge jailed three on charges of collaborating with a terrorist group. The fourth, a woman, was released.

Authorities had said they believed the suspects aided an Algerian-based Islamic extremist organization, the Salafist Group for Call and Combat, which has declared allegiance to al-Qaida.

On Nov. 23, Spanish police arrested 11 Algerians suspected of providing financing and logistical support to the same Algerian group. They were arrested in the eastern cities of Alicante and Murcia and in Granada in the south. A week later, a judge charged four of them with belonging to a terror cell but released the other seven, although he ordered they surrender their passports and check in with the court weekly, reports the AP.
