Health Secretary John Reid said to day that it is needed a range of measures to make people give up smoking, it is not enough just to ban.
Dr Reid was speaking ahead of publication of the Government’s public health white paper on Tuesday, which is expected to include &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/main/18/90/360/14476_smoking.html ' target=_blank>anti-smoking measures.
He stressed that imposing a smoking ban in public places was not enough to make people kick the habit.
Speaking on GMTV’s Sunday Programme, he said opinion polls showed people wanted severe restrictions on smoking in work and public places, as the Scotsman reported.
The Association of London Government, which represents 32 councils in the capital, was planning to bring forward a parliamentary Bill for a blanket ban. But without government support the move will fail.
Mr Livingstone had vowed during his re-election campaign to back moves for a blanket ban if that was what Londoners wanted.
