Participants In European Security Forum Point To Considerable Progress In Russia's Relations With EU And USA

The participants in a two-day European Security Forum, which has completed its work in the Belgian capital, pointed to a considerable progress in relations of Russia with the European Union and the United States. The main topic of the discussions at this international forum, which was organised on the initiative of a number of European research centres, was Russia's policy in the sphere of security and the development of relations between Russia and the European Union. The Brussels forum was attended by experts from the European Union member-countries and from the countries of the NATO-guided European Atlantic Partnership, including those from Russia. In the opinion of deputy director of the Russian Carnegie Centre Dmitry Trenin, who spoke at the forum, the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11th and the quick unequivocal reaction to these events by the Russian state have ushered in a new era in relations between Russia and the West. "An opportunity has emerged to create genuine Euroatlantic security structures in which Russia would also take part," pointed out Dmitry Trenin. He drew the attention of the forum participants to the fact that the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to support the actions of the international anti-terrorist coalition testify to "the pragmatic and philosophically thought-out strategic choice which Russia has made in its foreign policy." "This decision fully corresponds to the main task of the economic and social reforms, being conducted by the Russian President - to modernise the country, using the experience of the European countries, as soon as possible," underscored Dmitry Trenin.
