On Monday, Russian experts completed the exploration of the site of the future Trans-Korean railway in the DPRK, reported head of the expedition Anatoly Lyubarsky.
According to him, in the course of three weeks 35 experts examined the section of the future railway in North Korea between Wonsan and Kymgasan (nearly 102 kilometres). The remaining 18.5 kilometres up to the demarcation line dividing the North and the South of the Korean Peninsula are the territory where the railway was dismantled after the 1950-1953 war.
Over next year the Russian experts will draft a Feasibility Study of the construction of a nearly 800-kilometre line from the border between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea in the south to the border station Hassan of the Far Eastern Railway, said Lyubarsky.
The second expedition for examining the railway in the DPRK was carried out under the Russian-North Korean Memorandum singed in November 2002 in Pyongyang. The first expedition was sent in 2001. It examined all the 781 kilometres of the future railway that runs through the DPRK and resulted in the appearance of the documents on the reconstruction of the North Korean part of the railway. The successful realisation of the project of linking the Trans-Korean Railway with the Trans-Siberian Railway will make it possible for Russia to attract transit transportation of 500,000 20-feet containers a year. The profits in this case will amount to more than one billion dollars.
The business quarters of Japan, China and the Central European countries take a great interest in the modernisation of the Trans-Korean Railway and its linking to the Trans-Siberian Railway. This way will be the shortest in the world transit container corridor between Asia and Europe. Freight trains will cover this road in twelve days, by comparison it takes a month to cover the route by sea.
Since the beginning of 2002, the amount of international containers through the East-West-East corridor, with transit through Russia, has increased by 38 percent, and during the whole of the last year - by a quarter.
