Moscow and Washington have new possibilities for cooperation in conflict settlement, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleskei Meshkov told an international conference in Moscow. Once bitter enemies, Russia and the US are now becoming partners. First of all, it concerns the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, the effort to revive the country and joint action within the Group of Four aimed at achieving settlement in the Middle East, Meshkov said. "Such a close cooperation, based on common interests, allows to take a new view of certain problems and to create a firm foundation for further relations," Meshkov stressed. According to him, the ability to achieve accord on principal issues and to give up past stereotypes is of particular importance at the moment. Moscow expects the Russian and US Presidents not only to discuss cooperation in these spheres, but also to issue relevant statements at the forthcoming summit, Meshkov added.
