Survey: Third of Estonians fear Russia

59% of Estonians believe that their best guarantee for security is to join NATO, according to a recent poll by Faktum. 16% of those surveyed do not exclude the possibility that Estonia could be invaded. 43% are confident that the world will not be stable or secure in the near future. 13% believe it will be stable and secure.

68% named terrorism the chief threat to stability, 59% said international crime, 58% listed weapons of mass destruction falling into the hands of criminals, 35% said the greatest threat was the increase in the influence of the US in the international arena and 33% mentioned Russia.

The survey was published in the newspaper Eesti Paevaleht yesterday. 48% of respondents say their best guarantee for security is joining the EU. 45% of those surveyed said keeping a friendly relationship with Russia and 28% said reaching a collective security agreement with the other Baltic countries. 1 thousand people took part in the survey which was held in February.
