The second round of talks between those countries known as the Friends of the UN Secretary General for Georgia will be held at the beginning of July in Geneva. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by the UN representative office in Georgia.
Friends of the UN Secretary General for Georgia include Russia, the US, France, Germany and Great Britain. Representatives of these countries together with UN experts are working on a peace-plan for Abkhazia and Georgia and are holding negotiations with representatives of the two countries. The negotiating countries are strongly advising Abkhazia and Georgia to accept the so-called Boden Plan, which would mean that Abkhazia becomes an independent state within a sovereign Georgia. This would basically mean a state within a state. The Abkhazian leadership is categorically against such a plan while the Georgian leadership has not given its clear approval although it has said it is ready to discuss the Boden Plan.
Talks in Geneva were stopped in 2001 after Georgian military forces helped a group of bandits to cross into Abkhazia in order to cause problems on the Abkhazian border. Now, however, Sukhumi has expressed its willingness to reopen negotiations.
