"Jews Survived in Latvia" organisation opposes this country's accession into NATO

The "Jews Survived in Latvia" public organisation is opposing this country's accession into NATO. According to a RIA Novosti correspondent, the organisation submitted a relevant letter to the US President and Congress. The organisation unites the Jews survived in Latvia during World War II and who now live all over the world.

The authors of the open letter, which was made public on Monday in Latvia, write that during World War II almost all the Jewish population - about 85,000 people - was exterminated. Moreover, the document states, "not only the Nazis, but also volunteer death squads from the infamous Latvian SS legion participated in the bloodshed." According to the letter, one of the conditions for Latvia's accession into NATO is the government's public recognition of genocide against Jews in the country. "At present, the government, unlike other countries, finds it impossible to apologise for all the crimes committed", the document in particular states.
