Jordan caught in the middle

Jordan stands to lose everything if a war breaks out in the Gulf. Since then, Amman has leant more and more towards Washington and US aid has poured into the country in political, military and economic packages. Should war break out in Iraq, Jordan will lose millions in much-needed revenue from its neighbour.

All of Jordan’s oil comes from Iraq. If Amman sides with Washington in a forthcoming conflict, its oil supply will dry up overnight, leaving Amman without electricity and without its valuable trading partner. Jordan’s trade with Iraq is worth one billion USD per year.

Tourists would stop coming to see the city of Petra, among other sites and if there were an exchange of missiles between Israel and Iraq, the country would be caught in the crossfire.
