US Armed Forces: Next stop Somalia

A German officer said after the meeting with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld “It is not a question of if there will be an attack on Somalia, but when”.

The United States of America believes that Somalia is harbouring terrorist groups. Certainly, the fact that a State as such is non-existent creates anarchic conditions which would favour the use of the territory as a hide-out by terrorist groups. However, some analysts believe that a figure such as Osama Bin Laden would never use a country like Somalia in which he would be so vulnerable.

The leader of the opposition party in Kenya declared to the press yesterday that President Arap Moi “may have given permission to the United States of America to use Kenyan bases against Somalia” while in London, the BBC has launched two extra broadcasts per day about this country. Nevertheless, there is no only clear indication so far from the United States that action is being contemplated against Somalia. A statement made by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the USA, General Richard Myers, confirmed that Somalia is one of the countries harbouring terrorists but that Washington.

At a press conference in Brussels, General Myers said: “Somalia is a potential country, the same as others, for a diplomatic mission to reinforce the law or for a potential military action”.

The wording inside the USA continues to be “potential”, while outside, it is “inevitable”.
