Lithuanian chief sees no peril to preserve if LUKoil keeps its word

LUKoil's extraction of oil near the Kurshk Spit does not represent a danger to the ecology of the Baltic if the company abides by the conditions that have been set for it. As reported by Rosbalt, this was what Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas told journalists at the airport here today after the return from Moscow of a Lithuanian government delegation that he led.

On Tuesday in Moscow Brazauskas met with Mikhail Kasyanov and discussed LUKoil's plans to begin extracting oil near the Kurshk Spit, a unique natural preserve. Brazauskas' view was strongly criticized by Valdas Adamkus, the former president of Lithuania. In an interview on Lithuanian National Radio today, Adamkus said Lithuania should oppose such plans and insist on cancellation of the project.

In the course of the two-day visit to Moscow, the Lithuanian delegation discussed a series of pressing matters involving Lithuanian-Russian economic cooperation.
