3 US states launch new project to teach foreign languages

The U.S. government will provide three states with money for a new project to teach foreign languages such as Arabic, Chinese and Spanish.

The pilot program likely will strengthen national security by improving U.S. relations with other countries and helping new immigrants, said Robert Slater, director of the National Security Education Program in Washington.

Texas, Ohio and Oregon will receive $333,333 (235,304 EUR) each for the program, which is backed by the U.S. departments of commerce, defense and labor, The Columbus Dispatch newspaper reported.

The project includes the following:

- Expanding foreign-language training - from pre-kindergarten to adult-education classes - in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Study-abroad opportunities also would grow.

- Increasing the number of foreign-language teachers and creating Internet language courses.
