Mongolia's president to visit China

Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar will visit China next week to discuss growing trade ties and attend a U.N. education conference, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Tuesday. Enkhbayar's visit begins Sunday and runs until Dec. 3, and he plans to travel to other cities in addition to Beijing, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao. In a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao, "the leaders of the two countries will discuss how to further promote good neighborliness and mutual trust," Liu said.

China is a leading investor in impoverished Mongolia, a former Soviet satellite.

Enkhbayar was elected president in May after serving as prime minister for the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party, which led the country for six decades under communism but now supports democracy and free markets.

Mongolia, wedged between China and Russia, is a close American ally. U.S. President George W. Bush visited Mongolia on Monday, the last stop on his eight-day trip to Asia, and he saluted the country for sending troops to Iraq.

Enkhbayar will attend a UNESCO conference focusing on education while in China, Liu said.

Hu paid a state visit to Mongolia in 2003. The former Mongolian president Natsagiin Bagabandi visited China in 2004, reports the AP. I.L.
